Residents can collect up to 50kg of free rock salt at the Langhorn Drive depot in Twickenham from 16 to 20 November. The council has also put 25 new grit bins across the borough.

Richmond residents can collect up to 50kg of free rock salt this month. The council is giving it away at its depot on Langhorn Drive, Twickenham, from Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, 9am to 3pm.

The council has also installed 25 new grit bins across the borough, it said on 4 November. Anyone can use a public grit bin to treat a pavement or path when it ices over.

How to collect your grit

  • Where: the council depot, Langhorn Drive, Twickenham
  • When: Monday 16 to Friday 20 November, 9am to 3pm
  • How much: up to 50kg per resident
  • Bring: photo ID and proof of address

The depot is a secure site, so you sign in at the gate reception. The council has not said whether it lends containers, so take your own bags or tubs.

Where the 25 new grit bins are

The council’s road gritting page lists them by ward. Nine of the 25 are at footbridges or bridges.

Which roads the council grits

From November to March the council grits selected roads in advance when ice is forecast. Its gritting page has a search for gritted roads and a map of the routes.

Most residential streets are not on those routes. Cllr Alexander Ehmann, deputy leader and chair of the transport committee, said the borough has “hundreds of miles of roads and pavements”, so the council has to prioritise.

In heavy snow the council also clears some footways and smaller roads. It lists these first:

  • footways in town centres and station forecourts
  • footbridges
  • paths near schools, care homes and hospitals
  • footways and roads on steep slopes

What it means for you

  • If your street is not on a gritting route, collect your salt in the week of 16 November, before the first hard frost.
  • If you rely on a footbridge at Kew Gardens, Mortlake, North Richmond, Twickenham, Whitton or East Sheen, there is now a bin on or by it.
  • If you are travelling in icy weather, check our roadworks and travel page for closures as well.
