Richmond Roadworks This Week: Ferry Road Shut, George Street Next

Richmond roadworks change week to week, so this page is checked against the council’s own orders each time. It was last checked on 2 October 2026.

The longest closure in the borough is behind the Twickenham riverside. Ferry Road is shut from Riverside to Little Ferry Road until 6 November, for external decoration works. Close by, Grosvenor Road, beside Twickenham station, is due to be shut from 1 to 25 October for water pipe replacement.

In Barnes, Parke Road is closed at the Suffolk Road junction until 6 October. Lowther Road then closes at the same junction until 14 October.

The council published three new notices on 1 October:

• Sydney Road and Church Road, Richmond, a short closure and a lane closure for water works, 10 to 14 October
• Clive Road, Twickenham, rolling parking suspensions for gas main replacement, 12 October to 6 November
• Holly Road, Twickenham, closed from Copthall Gardens to number 96, 13 to 15 October

The one most people will notice comes in the middle of the month. George Street, the heart of Richmond town centre, is due to be resurfaced from 13 to 15 October.

Everything dated is below, followed by the parts of driving here that do not change: a river with too few crossings, a South Circular that runs through residential streets, and a car park map where the price of a long stay varies by more than £10 between two car parks a few hundred yards apart.

Shut right now

These restrictions are in force. The council has made the traffic order in each case, so the dates are decisions rather than intentions. References are the council’s own, from the temporary traffic orders on its public notices page and the Public Notice Portal.

Gone from this list since 29 September, on the end dates their orders gave:

• Court Close in Twickenham, 28 to 30 September
• Atherton Road in Barnes, 28 and 29 September
• an emergency closure of Heath Gardens in Twickenham, between Heath Road and Radnor Gardens, 16 to 30 September (reference 26/188)

Nothing published since says any of these overran. Each order stays in force for 18 months to cover remedial work, though, so barriers can reappear for a day or two.

Twickenham water mains: Grosvenor Road and Heath Gardens first

Two council orders cover a rolling water pipe replacement programme across ten streets in Twickenham, from 1 October to 17 December. Both were advertised on 24 September as orders the council intends to make. The copies on the council’s public notices page still read that way on 2 October, and we have not yet seen the made orders. So treat the dates as planned rather than fixed.

The first two streets were due to start on 1 October:

• Grosvenor Road, closed between the Station Yard and Holly Road junctions, with waiting restrictions, 1 to 25 October (reference 26/184). The signed diversion runs via Station Yard, Station Road, Clifden Road, Heath Road, King Street, London Road and Holly Road.
• Heath Gardens, access only between Heath Road and Radnor Gardens, 1 October to 11 November (reference 26/183). Diversion via Heath Road, Radnor Road and Radnor Gardens.

Grosvenor Road is the one to plan around. It runs beside Twickenham station, and the diversion is seven roads long, through the town centre.

Coming in the next fortnight

These are notices of intent from 24 September and 1 October, plus the later stages of orders already made. Dates are as the council printed them.

Two things worth knowing about these:

• Holly Road and Grosvenor Road meet. If the Grosvenor Road closure runs to its planned dates, both will be shut at once from 13 to 15 October, on the same side of Twickenham station.
• Clive Road picks up where Strawberry Vale leaves off. The Strawberry Vale order ends on 9 October, and the new Clive Road order starts on 12 October.

The Sydney Road notice names the far end of the Church Road lane closure as “a point near the junction with Sheen Lane”. The council’s own index lists the order as “Sidney Road, Twickenham”. We have used the road name and area printed in the notice itself.

Barnes: Parke Road now, Lowther Road from 6 October

The Barnes gas main replacement, order 26/152, runs from 28 August to 27 November in five phases. Phase 5, the last, is on Suffolk Road and Berkeley Road and ends today.

On top of that the council has made a closure order for two side roads:

• Parke Road, at the junction with Suffolk Road by number 35, closed 28 September to 6 October
• Lowther Road, at the junction with Suffolk Road by number 65, closed 6 to 14 October

The diversion is via Berkeley Road and Cumberland Road.

A note on the reference. The notice of intent on 17 September numbered this order 26/182, and the council’s index still lists it as 26/182. The made order published on 24 September prints it as 26/179, the same number as the separate Atherton Road order in the same week. We have left the reference off the tables rather than guess which is right.

Hampton: five weeks of gas works, street by street

One made order, reference 26/177, covers the Hampton gas main job from 28 September to 2 November. It moves in stages:

The council says access will be maintained on South Road and Coombe Crescent. It does not say that for Old Farm Road or Oak Avenue, both of which carry full diversions.

The Thames towpath at Teddington Lock shuts on weekdays

The council made two towpath closure orders to let the Environment Agency work at Teddington Lock. Both took effect on 21 September and both stay in force for six months:

• Reference 26/174 closes the towpath between the base of Teddington Lock footbridge and the river end of the lock access road, next to the east corner of the lock. A signed diversion goes round the closed area.
• Reference 26/173 closes 30 metres of the riverside towpath running west from the north-west corner of Ham Street car park, and it bars pedestrians as well as vehicles. A route is provided round the works compound.

Both orders say the closures apply Mondays to Fridays only and are likely to last about four hours at a time. Neither names the hours. So the towpath between Ham and Teddington Lock is usable at weekends and unpredictable on weekdays until about March.

Kew Road: cycle lane suspended until 18 November

Order 26/167 suspends the cycle lane in Kew Road between numbers 117 and 193 for electrical works, with parking suspensions as signed, from 10 September to 18 November 2026. That is the main road between Richmond town centre and Kew Gardens. Anyone riding between the two should expect to share a running lane with traffic until mid-November.

Ham community market closes a slip road on Saturday

The council made a special events order on 3 September, reference 26/166, for a community market in Richmond Road, Ham. The slip road between the Tudor Drive and Cranmer Court junctions closes 7am to 3.30pm on market days. Two remain, the first this Saturday:

• Saturday 3 October, 7am to 3.30pm
• Saturday 7 November, 7am to 3.30pm

Traffic is diverted via Richmond Road and Upper Ham Road, and emergency vehicles keep unrestricted access.

Two consultations have closed

Both of these were proposals, and both took representations until 25 September 2026. Neither has been decided yet; a made order would appear in the council’s weekly notices.

• A 20mph limit at the Kingston Bridge roundabout. The council proposes to cut the limit from 30mph to 20mph on all lengths of High Street, Hampton Wick, Hampton Court Road and Church Grove near the roundabout, under reference 26/168. • Extending the WR controlled parking zone into Chase Gardens, Twickenham, operating 8.30am to 6.30pm Mondays to Saturdays, reference 26/158.

Two permanent changes drivers will notice

Both of these are ordinary traffic orders rather than temporary works, so they do not expire.

• Willow Way, Twickenham. The council made a prescribed route order on 19 August 2026, in force from 24 August, that continues indefinitely a restricted vehicle access point at the junction with Bye Ways and River Way. It operates 7am to 10am, Mondays to Fridays, for north-eastbound movements only. Residents with an exemption permit, emergency services and cyclists are not caught by it. Reference 25/042.
• School streets in Twickenham and East Sheen. A prescribed route order made on 26 August came into force on 3 September, continuing the Stanley Road school street in Twickenham and introducing one in West Temple Sheen, East Sheen. Camera enforcement on West Temple Sheen runs 8.15 to 9.15am and 3 to 4.45pm on term-time weekdays, and a penalty is £160. Resurfacing: nothing until 9 October

Richmond Council has published phase 3 of its 2026/2027 carriageway resurfacing programme, which names 16 roads with dates. Eight have been done. What remains is below, taken from the council’s roadworks and streetworks page. That page still carries the stamp “Updated: 10 September 2026”, and the phase 3 table was unchanged when we checked it on 2 October. The next job is Sheen Lane on 9 October, so nothing on the programme runs for the next week.

One entry matters well beyond its own street. George Street, from 13 to 15 October, is the heart of Richmond town centre, and it should be assumed to affect buses as well as cars.

The same council page also lists a much longer footway maintenance programme and a pothole and patching programme for 2025/26 with named roads but no dates, so those appear when the crews get to them rather than on a schedule you can plan around.

Bushy Park and Richmond Park gates

The deer cull in Bushy Park started on Tuesday 1 September and runs for six weeks, so it is due to end in the week of 13 October. For as long as it lasts, the vehicle gates are locked each night from 7pm and the pedestrian gates from 10.30pm, with all gates reopening at 8am. Gates are open as normal on Saturdays and Sundays. The Hampton Hill Gate resurfacing, which shut the vehicle gates there on 23 September, was a one-day job.

The parks’ own key information on 2 October reads:

• Bushy Park: pedestrian gates 24 hours, vehicle gates 8am to 7pm
• Richmond Park: pedestrian gates open 24 hours, vehicle gates 7am to 6.45pm

The Bushy Park panel no longer shows the 10.30pm pedestrian lock-up that the deer cull notice set out. The cull notice itself has not been withdrawn, so if you plan to walk through Bushy Park late in the evening before mid-October, allow for the gates being locked.

Both sets shift with the season, so neither park is a through route worth relying on at a fixed time. Both are free to enter, and what else is worth a visit is on the things to do in Richmond page.

The bridges, and Hammersmith

Richmond upon Thames sits on both banks of the river, which means almost every cross-borough journey involves a bridge, and the bridges are the constraint.

Hammersmith Bridge remains closed to motor vehicles. It has been shut to traffic since April 2019. Stabilisation work on the cast-iron pedestals let it reopen to pedestrians, cyclists and river traffic in July 2021, and the Department for Transport has put close to £13 million into the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham for the work, but there is still no funded plan and no date for reopening it to cars and buses. The government reconvened its Hammersmith Bridge taskforce on 30 January 2025 to look again at the options, and that page has not been updated since 28 February 2025. For Barnes and Castelnau this is the single biggest fact about local driving: traffic that would use Hammersmith is pushed onto Chiswick Bridge and Putney Bridge instead.

The crossings that are open carry the load: Chiswick Bridge and Kew Bridge to the north, Richmond Bridge and Twickenham Bridge in the middle, and Kingston Bridge at the southern end.

Roads to know

• A316 Chertsey Road and Great Chertsey Road, the M3 link, which runs across the borough from Chiswick Bridge through Twickenham to the Hospital Bridge and Apex Corner roundabouts. This is the fast road out and the one most likely to have overnight lane closures. Parking is suspended along part of it for gas works until 16 October.
• A205 South Circular, which enters the borough as Clifford Avenue and Mortlake Road and is the main east-west route through Mortlake, East Sheen and Kew. Because it runs on ordinary streets rather than a purpose-built road, a single set of temporary lights on it backs traffic up quickly.
• A305 Sheen Road and A307 Petersham Road, the local spine from Richmond town centre south towards Kingston.
• A308 Hampton Court Road and A312 Uxbridge Road in the Hampton and Hampton Hill half of the borough.

ULEZ applies everywhere in the borough

Every street in Richmond upon Thames is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day, across all London boroughs. If your vehicle does not meet the standards and is not exempt, the charge is £12.50 a day. There is no part of this borough where that does not apply, including the far end of Hampton and the Barnes side of the river.

What parking actually costs

Council car park tariffs in this borough vary far more than most people expect, and the difference is largest exactly where you are most likely to want a long stay.

The practical point for Richmond town centre: Old Deer Park (TW9 2RA) has 285 car bays and charges £21.10 for up to 24 hours, and it is free to park in outside its charging hours of Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm and Sunday and bank holidays 11am to 5pm. The Paradise Road multi-storey (TW9 1SQ), 337 bays, charges £31.60 for a stay over nine hours, which is £10.50 more for the same day in the same town centre. Paradise Road earns some of that back with a cheap evening rate of £4.95 from 6pm to midnight and by being open until midnight seven days a week, which Old Deer Park is not. Note that the Park Lane entrance to Old Deer Park is closed 7.30am to 9.30am Monday to Friday.

In Twickenham, the Arragon Road multi-storey (TW1 3NG) is the big one at 437 bays, £18.25 for over six hours, with a special events tariff of £26.45 that applies on match days at Allianz Stadium. It has a 1.9 metre height restriction and is locked outside Monday to Saturday 7am to midnight and Sunday 9.30am to 6pm.

In Teddington, the three council car parks are all cheap by borough standards: Teddington Pool (TW11 8EZ) tops out at £7.80 for four hours.

All council car parks take pay and display, RingGo or a card, and residents with a RichmondCard get free parking for stays of up to 30 minutes in most of them.

If you are driving in because parking beats the train, it is worth checking the numbers first: the zone, fare and journey time from every station in the borough are set out separately, and a zone 4 daily cap of £12.80 undercuts a day in the Paradise Road multi-storey by a wide margin.

From 28 September to 6 November 2026, between the Riverside and Little Ferry Road junctions, for external decoration works. The council made the order, reference 26/176, on 24 September. Northbound traffic is diverted via Little Ferry Road and Lebanon Park.

Is Grosvenor Road in Twickenham closed?

It is due to be. The council gave notice on 24 September that it intends to close it between the Station Yard and Holly Road junctions from 1 to 25 October 2026 for water pipe replacement, under reference 26/184. We had not seen the made order by 2 October, so the dates are planned rather than fixed.

When is George Street in Richmond being resurfaced?
